The Importance of Shukr (Gratitude) in a Mumin’s Life

Introduction

In every dua and every moment of life, a true Mumin is reminded to say “Alhamdulillah” all praise and thanks be to Allah. Gratitude, or Shukr, is among the most beautiful qualities a Mumin can possess. It is a sign of iman, humility, and recognition of the countless ni’mat (blessings) bestowed by Allah Ta’ala and through the guidance of Aqa Maula TUS.

In the Dawoodi Bohra faith, Shukr is not just an emotion; it is a way of living a constant remembrance that everything we have, from the smallest blessing to the greatest achievement, comes through the mercy of Allah and Waliullah.

The Meaning of Shukr in Islam

The word “Shukr” comes from the Arabic root meaning to appreciate or to acknowledge goodness.
In the Holy Qur’an, Allah Ta’ala says:

“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor].” – (Surah Ibrahim 14:7)

This ayat beautifully explains that when a Mumin offers Shukr, Allah increases his blessings. Gratitude opens the door to more barakat, peace, and satisfaction in life.

Shukr is not only spoken on the tongue but felt in the heart and reflected through actions  by obeying Maula’s farmaan, performing khidmat, and using every blessing for good purpose.

Shukr in the Life of a Mumin

For a Dawoodi Bohra Mumin, Shukr is expressed daily from Fajr dua to Isha namaz, in FMB ni ni’mat, in Aqa Maula TUS na asbaab, and in the opportunity to do khidmat for Dawat.

Each breath, each morsel of food, each day of health, is a chance to say:
“Shukranlillah wa shukranli Maula.”

Even in times of hardship, a Mumin remembers that challenges are also a form of blessing a way to strengthen sabr (patience) and bring one closer to Allah.

Teachings of Aqa Maula TUS on Shukr

Our beloved Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS has often emphasized in waaz and bayaan that a grateful heart is a happy heart. Maula TUS reminds mumineen to appreciate small things, to say Alhamdulillah often, and to remember those who serve us in daily life parents, family, friends, and community members.

Under his guidance, the Dawoodi Bohra community practices gratitude not only in prayers but also through actions by sharing ni’mat, feeding the hungry, preserving resources, and living with contentment.

This is true Shukr thankfulness that transforms into goodness.

Examples of Shukr in Dawoodi Bohra Mumen Life

  1. Through FMB (Faiz ul Mawaid al-Burhaniyah):
Mumineen express gratitude by partaking in ni’mat prepared under Maula’s blessings and ensuring no one sleeps hungry.

  2. Through Khidmat:
Every act of khidmat whether in masjid, at home, or for society  is a form of Shukr for the strength, opportunity, and guidance bestowed by Allah and Maula TUS.

  3. Through Sadaqah and Helping Others:
Giving in charity is gratitude in action. It reflects recognition that what we possess is an amanat (trust) from Allah.

  4. Through Obedience and Love for Maula TUS:
A Mumin shows true gratitude by living according to Maula’s farmaan and striving to earn his khushi (pleasure).

Spiritual Benefits of Shukr

  • Increases Barakat: Allah promises to increase the blessings of those who are thankful.

  • Brings Sukoon (Peace): Shukr removes envy, comparison, and anxiety.

  • Strengthens Iman: It keeps the heart connected to Allah and Waliullah.

  • Transforms Perspective: Even challenges become opportunities to grow closer to Allah.

  • Earns Maula’s Khushi: A grateful Mumin becomes the beloved of his Maula.

How to Practice Shukr Daily

  1. Begin and end your day with Alhamdulillah.

  2. Reflect on three blessings daily  health, family, or even the ability to pray.

  3. Do Shukr Sajdah often  thanking Allah with sincerity.

  4. Help someone in need; gratitude grows by sharing.

  5. Remember Maula TUS in your duas, for his presence is the greatest ni’mat in our lives.

The Ultimate Shukr – Recognizing the Ni’mat of Maula TUS

Among all blessings, the greatest for a Mumin is being under the guidance of Aqa Maula Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin TUS, the Dai of Imam-uz-Zaman (AS).
To live in his era, to receive his dua mubarak, to serve in Dawat ni khidmat these are treasures beyond measure.

As Maula TUS says:

“Be thankful for every small ni’mat, and you will see Allah Ta’ala multiply them for you.”

Conclusion

Shukr is the soul of a Mumin’s life. It brings joy, peace, and closeness to Allah Ta’ala and Maula TUS. A heart that beats with gratitude can never be empty, for it is filled with noor, sukoon, and barakat.

Let us all make Shukr our habit in our prayers, in our actions, and in our hearts.
Because a Mumin who lives with gratitude truly lives in the rahmat (mercy) of Allah Ta’ala.

“Alhamdulillah ʿala kulli haal – All praise to Allah in every condition.”
