Ahmedabad Part-05: Prominent Qubbas and Martyrs of Dawoodi Bohra Heritage

Ahmedabad has long been a center of Dawoodi Bohra history and spiritual heritage. Alongside the famous Mazars and Qubbas, several other significant sites commemorate the lives of devoted Duat and Hudud who contributed to the Dawat and sacrificed their lives for faith. In this post, we explore these historic shrines and the stories behind them.

1. Maulaya Adam QS: The Foundation of Dawat in Ahmedabad

  • Qubba Mubarak: Houses the tomb of Maulaya Adam QS.

  • Notable Figures Nearby:

    • Khawaja Kalan bin Abdullah: Located to the east of Maulaya Adam’s Qubba.

      • Wafat: 19 Zilqadtul Haram 872H / 1468 AD

      • Came to Ahmedabad under the instruction of Wali-ul-Hind Maula Ali bin Ishaq.

      • Served in the Dawat as a dedicated Hudud.

    • Shaikh Luqmanji and Maula Mulla Saleh Bhai bin Maula Najamkhan:

      • Descendants of Syedi Jiwanji, contributed significantly to Dawat.

      • A Qubba was built by Syedna Tayeb Zainuddin RA at Maulaya Adam’s shrine.

      • Family tombs, including Najamkhan and Mulla Moti Bhai, are near Maulaya Adam QS.

2. Maula Firoz bin Ismail: Martyr of Knowledge and Faith

  • Wafat: 13 Zilqadtul Haram 946H / 1540 AD

  • Visited Maulaya Adam’s shrine before heading toward Kankaria near the railway crossing.

  • Dedicated youth of knowledge (Talib-ul-Ilm), he was traveling to Syedna Dawood bin Qutubshah’s residence to teach on the eve of his wedding.

  • Martyrdom: Attacked and killed by enemies along the route.

  • Shrine Features:

    • A basement (Bhoiru) near the tomb reputedly held treasures of Dawat manuscripts.

    • To the west, the Masjid of Syedna Dawood bin Qutubshah stands.

3. Maulaya Yusufji Wa Taiyabji

  • Shahadat: 4 Shawwal 1011H

  • Paid tribute to Maula Firoz and has a Qubba near Sarangpur.

  • A young scholar and Talib-ul-Ilm martyred while pursuing religious studies.

4. Hasanji Shaheed & Aluji Shaheed

  • Shahadat: 14 Shehre Jamadil Akhar

  • Martyred during the Fitnat of Jafar, defending the faith and supporting the Dawoodi Bohra community.

5. Maula Khawaja Mohammed bin Ishaq

  • Shahadat: 17 Safar

  • Served as Wali-ul-Hind and remained steadfast in faith during Jafar’s Fitnat.

  • All his brothers abandoned Dawat, but he upheld the teachings of Islam.

  • His Mazar has faced repeated disrespect over centuries,yet remains a place of reverence.

6. Panch Shaheed of Ahmedabad

During periods of persecution and Fitnat:

  • Background: Following Syedna Qutbuddin’s Shahadat, rulers tried to suppress followers of Dawat.

  • Martyrs’ Details:

    • Shaikh Dawood bin Shaikh Aminji: Served under Syedna Kalimuddin and Syedna Nuruddin.

    • Shaikh Ghulam Hussain bin Shaikh Dawood Bhai: Active during Syedna Moaiyedin’s time.

    • Mulla Mohammed Aminji: Oversaw the construction of several Qubbas in Ahmedabad in 1212H during Syedna Yusuf Najmuddin and Syedna Abedali Saifuddin’s era.

    • Mulla Masood: A Hudud Fazil from Dhandhagra, martyred near Sabarmati river.

    • Mulla Malek Shah bin Shaikh Idris Nuruddin Khambati and Mulla Ismail: Residents of Baroda, martyred during Laeen Jafar’s Fitnat.

  • These five martyrs are collectively known as the Panch Shaheed, remembered for their courage and unwavering faith.

7. Other Notable Qubbas and Shrines

Ahmedabad houses many shrines commemorating the sacrifices and contributions of Dawoodi Bohra leaders:

  • Maulaya Hasan Qubba: Eastern side holds three martyrs’ tombs.

  • Shaikh Luqmanji and Mumena Aaisaheba: Tombs located toward Mashriq.

  • Syedna Dawood bin Qutubshah’s Qubba: Nearby tombs of 40 martyrs.

  • Syedi Aminji Jalal, Maulaya Abuji, Maula Harun bin Saeed: Prominent figures interred in the vicinity, contributing to Dawat and enduring hardships.

  • Shaikha Mujal’s Family Tombs and other historical Qubbas line the sacred precincts.

These shrines are not only markers of faith but also living history, reflecting the courage, devotion, and scholarly pursuits of Dawoodi Bohra leaders across generations.
