Patan, one of Gujarat’s most historic cities, has played a remarkable role in the spread and strengthening of Dawat-e-Hadiyah in Hindustan. Known for its rich cultural heritage, Patan has also been home to some of the most revered personalities in Dawoodi Bohra history. Among them are Maulaya Bharmal (Q.S.), his noble descendants, and the lineage of Duat and Hudood who dedicated their lives to the cause of truth.

Maulaya Bharmal (Q.S.) & Maulaya Tarmal (Q.s) – From Royalty to Service of Dawat
Maulaya Bharmal (Q.S.) was born into a lineage of rulers in Patan. Despite his royal background, he and his brother Maulaya Tarmal (Q.S.) were guided by divine providence towards the light of Islam. They embraced Iman at the blessed hands of Maulaya Abdullah (A.Q.), one of the prominent Duat of Hindustan.
The acceptance of faith by Maulaya Bharmal and his brother was a turning point in the history of Dawat in Gujarat. They not only devoted themselves to serving the mission of truth but also laid the foundation for a legacy of scholars and spiritual leaders. Owing to their devotion, Allah blessed their lineage with eminent Duat, Hudood, and Fozola (learned religious figures) who continued their mission for generations.

Maulaya Yaqub bin Maulaya Bharmal (A.Q.) – The First Wali of Hind-Sind
One of the most distinguished figures from this noble family was Maulaya Yaqub bin Maulaya Bharmal (A.Q.). He was a man of great piety, wisdom, and leadership.

Recognition by Syedna Taher Saifuddin (R.A.): In his risala Mafatihul-Yakutil-Hams, Syedna Taher Saifuddin (R.A.) mentioned Maulaya Yaqub, honoring his dedication and contributions to Dawat.

Upholder of Shariat: Maulaya Yaqub was renowned for his noble character and his commitment to upholding Shariat. He worked tirelessly to revive and strengthen religious practices among Mumineen across Hindustan.

First Wali of Hind-Sind: After the passing of Maulaya Abdullah (A.Q.), Maulaya Yaqub assumed leadership as the first Wali-ul-Hind, taking charge of Dawat in the Indian subcontinent.
Support and Expansion of Dawat
Maulaya Yaqub received immense support from his cousin, Syedi Fakhruddin Shaheed (A.Q.), son of Maulaya Tarmal. Together, they worked to spread the mission of Dawat despite challenging circumstances.
Maulaya Yaqub dispatched Syedi Fakhruddin (A.Q.) to Vaaghar (present-day Rajasthan), where Dawat activities continued in secrecy for many years due to political instability and opposition.
Establishments in Patan and Beyond
Maulaya Yaqub resided in Patan and took significant steps to strengthen the Dawat infrastructure:

Construction of the First Masjid in Patan: He built the first masjid in Patan, providing a place for Mumineen to gather and perform ibadat.

Masjid in Petlad: He also constructed a masjid in Petlad, expanding the reach of Dawat in Gujarat.

Training of Successors: Maulaya Yaqub personally educated and trained his son, Maulaya Ishaq (Q.S.), preparing him to lead Dawat in the future.
Wafat and Resting Place
Maulaya Yaqub passed away on 14th Rajab-ul-Asab in Patan. His Qubba Mubaraka lies in the Old Qabrastan of Patan, revered as Miyan Mehboob, and remains a site of ziyarat for Mumineen.

Wali-ul-Hind Maulaya Ishaq bin Maulaya Yaqub (Q.S.)
Following the demise of Maulaya Yaqub, his son Maulaya Ishaq (Q.S.) took charge as Wali-ul-Hind. He faced a period of great challenges when Dawat had to operate in secrecy due to external threats. Despite these hardships, Maulaya Ishaq ensured that the chain of Dawat remained unbroken, continuing the mission of his forefathers with unwavering determination.

After Maulaya Ishaq, Maulaya Ali (Q.S.) succeeded as Wali-ul-Hind. He was widely respected for his exceptional knowledge, foresight, and leadership abilities.

This migration included figures such as Maulaya Adam, Khawaja Kalam, and Shaikh Maujil, laying the foundation of a vibrant Bohra community in Ahmedabad.
Maulaya Ali’s vision and leadership ensured that Dawat not only survived but also flourished during his time.
Later Generations and Continuity of Dawat
Maulaya Dawood (A.S.), son of Maulaya Ali, served as Amil of Patan and continued his father’s mission. His son, Maulaya Raj bin Dawood, later moved to Morbi during the period of internal trials known as Jafar’s fitnat, ensuring that Dawat persisted even through turbulent times.
